These are the cutest! I want to try making these for my sister, but I have a couple questions if you'll permit me. :D How sturdy are they, for one? Do they stand up to everyday wear nice enough? (I mean, my sister's a computer programmer and not a football player or anything so it's not like I'm expecting extreme conditions, but I just want to make sure they'd be sturdy... XD) Also, the pins--I've seen eye pins used with various polymer clay charms and whatnot, do you just stick 'em in there and bake? I'm curious as to how strong they'll hold if that's the case.

Hi there! Sorry for the late response.. My mother has several pairs of these and wears them regularly. She's a nurse, so for as far as I know they handle daily use fairly well, hers never broke :)
I used to just stick the pins in, these days I make sure my pins have two rounds and one side I put in the Elephant and the other is for hanging the earring on, I make sure that te round/loop inside the elephant is sealed up nicely at the top, so it doesn't have the chance to fall out. And the gloss also helps keeping everything in place ;)

Good luck with making these cuties!

if this is a stupid question, feel free to laugh at me, but could we use clear nail varnish as glaze? :)

You can. I don't use it, I would recommend to use a 'real' glaze, just to make sure that the glaze holds longer. :)

Awesome! I got jewelry making stuff back in December, but I haven't used it since. Once I get money for clay I'd like to try this.

Just wondering, but what terperature should we bake them? :D

Sandien Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2012  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
That depends on the type of clay you use ;) Fimo Soft is usually baked at 110 degrees celcius, while fimo classic should be baked at 130 degrees celcius. Just follow the directions on the package of your clay :D

These are super cute! I haven't done anything like this before, so forgive my questions!
For the clay its obviously the type that goes into the oven -- but for glazing is it a special type of glaze? Do I glaze before or after baking them?? Thanks.

I glaze them with a regular glaze, no nailpolish. And I glaze them after I bake them, because the clay will react to the heat of the baking and glaze is not heat resistant ;)

When I first saw the title, I misread it as "Elephant EATING tutorial." While I am disappointed that this did not teach me how to eat an elephant, these are kind of adorable
